Take some polymer micro-spheres from the database, having the strange ability to expand 40 times in volume when subjected to heat, plus a little bit of black ink, plus the intelligence and teaching skills of an ex-ECAL-student (Ali-eddine Abdelkhalek) and you obtain a quite eloquent and demonstrative short film illustrating the mentioned property. Look out, contrary to what might suggest the GIF, the phenomenon is not reversible. It should also give you some ideas of what you could do with it... which is, by the way, why matériO does exist..
